Walk raises awareness about potential toxic roads
Nearly 50 people participated in the first Walk for the Homies on Saturday, Aug. 12, in eastern Collier County. People walked the 6.7 miles toward Skunk Ape Headquarters or supported by vehicle in the first of a series of prayer walks held the second Saturday of the month to raise awareness of the fertilizer industry's billion tons of radioactive waste, called phosphogypsum, being considered for use as road base. Walk raises awareness about potential toxic roads

Walking among biting mosquitoes and in record-breaking heat, approximately 40 people prayed for the healing of the planet as they trekked 6.7 miles along U.S. 41 in eastern Collier County on Saturday, Aug. 12. The prayer walk was intended to raise awareness of potentially constructing a road base using phosphogypsum, a byproduct of the fertilizer industry that the Environmental Protection Agency has required be kept away from public exposure due to its radioactive, cancer-causing radon emissions.
